Tricia Hixon is one of our amazing Sseko Fellows and adds to much depth to our community with her insights and eloquent observations. Today, she shares with us a little about her experience stepping into sisterhood…
Sharon is the leader of our ribbon sandal strap team and a talented seamstress. She is a quick-learner, diligent with all the work she’s given. She’s the type of person who makes your spirit feel happy from talking to her, and at the end of each interaction, you just want to hug her.
Sharon is incredibly loving and generous to her family and friends and is a joy to have around. She’s said that “keeping quiet makes me sick,” so if you ever need a good chat, Sharon is your girl. She’s married and she and her husband just welcomed their second child. We were able to catch this interview with her before she left for maternity leave!
No One Belongs Here More Than You
This sentiment is more than a Sseko motto, but a badge of honor for each of 68 Fellows who attended Sseko Summit 2018. For some Sseko Fellows flying to Portland, Oregon was their first time meeting another Sseko Fellow in person. Countless emails and phone calls transformed into hugs and celebration as women front across the country began to learn and share her Sseko Story.
Sseko Designs started in Uganda with four women under a mango tree making leather sandals with interchangeable straps. Mary, Mercy, Rebecca and myself. We were impossibly naive and hopeful about the future and the impact that a single girl and pair of sandals could make in her community and our world.

Recently, I have been reflecting back to June 2017. This was one of the hardest months of my life. After a bout of sickness, my youngest son Matteo, was diagnosed with epilepsy caused by fevers and overheating. News no parent ever wants to hear. I was fearful of not only his safety but what my life would now look like because of this change.
