Sseko Fellows, Women of Sseko

From Sales to Sisterhood: Karen’s Story

The mission of Sseko and what it’s doing across the globe for women, was what first drew me to the company. I volunteer for non-profits and am on the board of an anti-sex-trafficking coalition in my community, so everything Sseko is about gets me so excited!

I had dabbled in direct sales in the past, so the “selling” side was familiar to me. Since I loved Sseko’s mission already, I was excited to be part of this amazing company once I heard they had opened up the opportunity to be a direct seller of beautiful Sseko products.

What I didn’t expect was the sisterhood that I’ve found.

Don’t get me wrong, I had made friendships through some of my previous work in direct sales, but nothing like what I’ve experienced at Sseko.

I’ve experienced sisterhood with the team at Sseko headquarters, which is so unique! Every time I call or email (and when I’ve met them in person!), I feel so known and cared for.

I joined Sseko on my own, but I LOVE that they’ve placed me on a team with other Sseko Fellows. Being part of a team has added another level of support and encouragement to everything that I do.

At over sixty years old, I think I’m one of the oldest Sseko Fellows. Yet, I don’t feel like I’m “on the outside” at all! In fact, when I came to Sseko Summit last summer, I had one of the most fun “sister moments” that illustrated just how accepted and loved I have felt:

During one of the dinners at Sseko Summit, the dress code was “little black dress” and I had completely missed the memo. Within minutes of this realization, I had loads of women at my door with extra black dresses that they’d brought. There I was, laughing and swapping clothes with women half my age. It was one of those little things that represents something so much bigger! What could have been an incident that left me feeling out of place, was instead turned into a memory I cherish!

There are so many amazing women in this community and I’ve enjoyed watching them grow in their womanhood over the past two years as they overcome barriers in life.

In my thirties, I learned to trust the process, step out in faith and just go do it. I think this lesson is crucial to all of us, but has been especially helpful in my process as a Sseko Fellow. You’ll fall down, you’ll fail, but keep going and things always get better. I am continually learning, and I adore getting to do it alongside the other women of Sseko.

I love the connection that I get to people through selling Sseko products (like the woman in the grocery store yesterday who complimented my handbag and is now a huge fan of Sseko!), but the sisterhood is something I never would have expected to be so fulfilling.

If you would like to step into the opportunity that Karen has as a Sseko Fellow, we would love to talk to you!

As a Sseko Fellow, you’ll be part of an incredibly supportive group of women, you’ll get to style and sell stunning fashionable products that make a difference in the lives of women across the globe, and you’ll earn an income for yourself and your family.
