Here at Sseko we deeply believe that every great journey begins with a small step. The Sseko Fellows are a tribe of women that have embarked on such a journey to create opportunity and community for women here in the states, as well as for our sisters in East Africa. One of those Fellows, Alexis Cook, recently took a step into our Fellows community. This is her New Beginnings story!
Tell us a little bit about yourself!
I am a mom to an amazing little lady, Lilah Mae, who is 2.5. We live in a small town in New Hampshire near the White Mountains. Coffee is my lifeblood. I’m currently on the road to living a minimalistic lifestyle and am finding it’s bringing so much peace and balance. Standing at the edge of the ocean feels like home. The waves, the sun, the breeze, there’s just nothing else like it. I love trying new recipes, going on adventures and laughing at anything and everything (self included).
What has been your favorite part (or two or three) about this new adventure with Sseko?
Being a source of direct, positive impact for my Sole Sister, Gift, and all the beautiful souls in Uganda is such an incredible feeling. Sseko has brought so much happiness into my life and I feel so blessed to be able to sprinkle that happiness throughout my community and beyond. The Fellowship is like a true sisterhood and I am so stoked to meet everyone next month! I have NEVER traveled alone. The retreat will be my first time and I can’t wait!
What inspires your personal style?
I am a hippie at heart and love boho style. I am a total sucker for anything floral. Comfort is key since I’m always running around with my toddler. I’m a big fan of thrift store finds and love supporting my favorite local shop, Positive Vibrations, as everything they sell is fair trade or made in the USA. As we know, how it’s made matters!
What piece of the Brave Manifesto resonates most with you? Why?
It’s so hard to choose just one piece of the Brave Manifesto. I’m going to have to go with “do things that scare you.” Flying cross country alone is a wee bit out of my comfort zone but I couldn’t be more grateful to Sseko for making me take that leap. I always find beautiful things happen when I don’t let fear hold me back!
What is your favorite piece in our Spring collection?
I am in love with the Sahara Sunset necklace. It is so unique and absolutely stunning. The raw rose quartz and paper beads are so fun. It makes for the perfect statement necklace! The jade bucket bag is at the top of my list as well.
