This season we’re focusing on the magic that comes from a new beginning. Maybe you caught a glimpse of that with the launch of our SS 17 collection! The Spring / Summer 2017 collection is an ode to origins and new beginnings. Handcrafted in East Africa, this collection is a celebration of hope in the lives of Sseko women, both in Uganda and here at home. One of those women is named Andie Reavely, and we are SO excited to introduce you to her.
Tell us a little bit about yourself!
My name is Andie and I am a wife and mother—sustained by God’s grace and the love of an excellent man. We live in a little white house with a forest green door, a staircase too steep and a kitchen that always smells like a good time—unless I forget to take out the compost. Hanging above my stove, a little sign reads, “I kiss better than I cook.” I have on good authority that I’m a pretty good kisser… so, the cooking must not be too bad either, so long as it doesn’t involve pie crust.
When I’m not cooking and kissing my husband of 4 1/2 years (sweetheart of 16 years!), I am photographing weddings and portraits. Out of my passion for people and their stories, my business, A Visual Anthology was born. Each and every person is beautiful and unique and is marked by the story they live—it is my great honor to capture and tell those stories.
This season we’re focusing on the beauty that comes from a new beginning! What beautiful things have you seen come from this new season of life that you’re in?
Ah, this new season of life—quite a new chapter for us! We are in the process of finalizing the adoption of our little baby girl, Cedar.
We waited, prayed, cried, prepared, trusted, hoped, dreamed, released and finally received the miracle of this precious little girl.
Getting to watch a little baby experience things for the first time really opens your eyes in a fresh way—a satiating stretch after a long nap, the feeling of elation when a loved one walks in the room or the vulnerability of allowing someone to look deeply into your eyes.
In the same way that she is experiencing a world for the first time, I am also getting to experience the world of being a momma for the first time.
My heart hiccups when she snuggles into the nook of my neck, or looks at me to know how she ought to react to a new experience. I am the one that knows the meaning behind each of her seven different cries and the language of her miniature body.
Also, the clemency of the messy bun is a mercy.
What inspires your personal style?
Honestly, my style tends to be very simplistic. I gravitate towards grey, black, chambray and… well, more black. However, I love to accent my wardrobe with choice pieces of well made jewelry and accessories! When I first read Leo Tolstoy’s novel, Anna Karenina, a quote stood out to me and I kind of went, “aha! yes! that’s exactly what I want.”
“Seeing her in black, she felt that she had never before realized that her charm lay precisely in the fact that her personality always stood out from her dress; that her dress was never conspicuous on her. And her black velvet with rich lace was not at all conspicuous, but served only as a frame. She alone was noticeable; simple, natural, elegant and at the same time, very merry and animated.”
— Leo Tolstoy, Anna Karenina
My husband likes to tease me and say that he is banning the purchase of additional grey or black clothing, as my wardrobe is 92% monochromatic.
What piece of the Brave Manifesto resonates most with you? Why?
It’s hard to choose just once piece of the Brave Manifesto that most resonates with me! However, if I must, I would probably choose, “when in doubt, give grace”. I have experienced and seen enough hurt in life to know that everyone you meet is fighting some unforeseen battle or bearing some burden that is unbeknownst to me. Sharp words and hurtful actions usually stem from brokenness and unhealed wounds in a person’s life.
Furthermore, I believe in showing grace to others, because I have experienced much grace been shown to me.
