Here at Sseko we deeply believe that every great journey begins with a small step. The Sseko Fellows are a tribe of women that have embarked on such a journey to create opportunity and community for women here in the states, as well as for our sisters in East Africa. One of those Fellows, Megan Marcel, recently took a step into our Fellows community. This is her story!
Tell us a little bit about yourself!
A bit about me! I’m 28, live in Long Island, New York with my dog Diesel 😉 I work as a corporate event planner and love to travel, which my job allows for quite frequently. Through this work travel, I was at an event where Liz was, and that is where I first learned about Sseko. I fell in love with the products immediately, and rather than just buying a few items, I knew I had to be more involved, so I applied to be a fellow! Now, I get to tell the Sseko story to not just friends and colleagues, but to every stranger I pass who compliments a piece from the collection. When I’m not working, I love to go to the beach, concerts or shopping!
This season we’re focusing on trusting in the magic of new beginnings, like this new beginning you’ve started with Sseko as a Fellow! What has been your favorite part about this new adventure with Sseko?
My favorite favorite part of my adventure with Sseko has been telling the story of Sseko as a company, and the people behind it. I love the close knit community, and the fact that we are all working together to create an impact in the world. I have colleagues in Southeast Africa and I get to see their work daily, and I wear it proudly. When someone asks me about where a certain item I’m wearing is from, I can lead into the story of the person behind it and tell her story. I also have colleagues around the US – women from all backgrounds, with all types of professions, lifestyles and passions. So in a nutshell, my favorite part of my new adventure with Sseko is knowing I’m not on this adventure alone, but working with incredible women all over the world.
What inspires your personal style?
I am inspired by my mood and people’s street style – I’m constantly snapping photos of pieces I like, asking someone where they got something, or looking through blogs/social media for ideas. My personal style is relaxed (maybe you’d call it bohemian chic?). I sound like a broken record, but back to travel, I am constantly inspired by peoples looks all over the world. From India to Prague, China to Vietnam, Africa to Belize… it’s fascinating to see people’s styles and I’m very intrigued by it.
What piece of the Brave Manifesto resonates most with you? Why?
“Say yes to adventure” – I love a great adventure, and this stems through travel with me. I enjoy learning about new cultures and embracing myself in them. When I decided to become a Sseko fellow, it was a bit about adventure and the unknown – I’d never done anything like this before – asking friends and family to trust me, invite me into their homes, and share products and stories with them. I loved the product, but I especially loved the ethos behind it – the amount of culture that goes into each item and the company as a whole is invigorating. That to me is adventure, and I get to spread it daily!
What is your favorite piece in our Spring collection?
The black leather wrap sandal! They are equally cute and comfortable – I love to wear them around. They go with just about anything – from jeans to dresses. I travel a ton, so having a great pair of versatile shoes is a must – and these do it time and time again! They take me from sightseeing adventures in the day to business dinners at night, and I always get compliments on them.
