This past week at Sseko, we celebrated our 5th birthday with parties in both Uganda and the U.S.A.
In our Uganda workshop, we took the afternoon off to celebrate five years of incredibly hard work. We had no idea that balloons would be such a hit, but between the impromptu dance parties and bites of the most delicious chocolate cake we could get our hands on, the air was full of floating pink and green orbs and shrieks of laughter.
These days, our workshop is full of women of all ages and from all corners of Uganda. Some are on their way to university in a couple of short months, and others have been with Sseko since the beginning; supporting their families and helping the company grow. In the midst of the celebration, we also took a few moments to reminisce and also to look toward the future.
At our U.S. office, the team managed to keep the birthday celebrations under wraps so as to surprise Liz, Ben & Brent! Luring them with talks of a trade show meeting, we gathered the team at our big conference table and then proceeded to sing “Happy Birthday.” Champagne was poured and delicious homemade lemon cake was consumed (thanks Gwynn!).
The best surprise, though, was the video that the team in Uganda sent to us. We huddled around a laptop to listen as the team reflected back on what Sseko has meant to them over the past 5 years. It’s truly crazy to think about how far we’ve come! Take a peek at what we’ve accomplished over the last 5 years here: Sseko Turns 5 Infographic.
The celebration finished off with a stop from the Ben & Jerry’s truck–because every celebration needs cake AND ice cream, right? Thank you to the Ben & Jerry’s truck team for swinging by and making our day that much greater!
We are so thankful to all of you who have helped us get to where we are. Here’s to 5 years even better than the last!
